JAMAICA 
 

Pronounced “shy‑MAH‑kah,” the Taíno word Xaymaca means “The Land of Wood and Water.” This name celebrates the island’s lush forests, sparkling rivers, and waterfalls—all very important to the Taíno people and their deep love for nature.

 

In 1494, when Christopher Columbus arrived, he tried to rename the island “Santiago” (Saint James). But the Taíno name was so strong and meaningful that it stayed alive. By the 16th century, the name had changed into Jamaica, keeping its Taíno roots at the heart of the island’s identity.
